Years ago, snowboarding is considered a wild or "bad boy" sport by many people. It is usually associated with adolescence and experimentation. Today, however, snowboarding is the fastest growing winter sport that attracts not only young people between ages 15 to 25 but also older people. The sport was formerly male dominated, but female participation is currently on the rise. Surveys show a drop in the male-female ratio from 9-to-1 to 3-to-1 from the year 1989 to the year 1995.

Though considered to be a dangerous sport, snowboarding fans have managed to come up with a number of different snowboarding trick types that can compete with that in skiing. A snowboard trick, however, is considered to be more dangerous. To get ready for the trick, novice snowboarders must do special exercises to strengthen the body before trying to practice a snowboard trick. Practice usually lasts a much longer time than most sports. Special exercises are done to improve one's body and make it ready in case of accidental falls or impacts from a failed snowboarding trick.

Examples of the necessary exercises are the power push-ups, the wall rotation stretch, bar squats, hip hinges and triceps dips. The main focus of these exercises is not only a specific part of the body, for instance, the upper part of the body but is intended to condition the entire body. Based from a study, snowboarding injuries from a failed snowboarding trick can be anywhere from a broken wrist to a dislocated elbow. The greatest percentage of injuries is in the wrist since it is the first line defense of the snowboarding athlete.

To further improve a snowboarding trick abilities, a novice snowboarder is encouraged to emulate the performances of the more experienced ones. This can save a snowboarder time in trying to perfect a particular trick. In watching videos of great snowboarding trick performers, beginners can have an idea of the necessary movements, how far one must bend to perform a trick, and much more.
